Designed by SSDA Architects, Plumeria House is shaped by functional planning, abundant natural light, and a courtyard-led layout.

Designing a home is as much about intention as it is about expression. In this contemporary residence, the guiding principle was clarity – of planning, movement, and experience. Conceived as a functional yet refined family home, the design brings together modern sensibilities with a strong connection to nature, resulting in spaces that feel calm, purposeful, and enduring.

Planned for a family of three, the residence accommodates five bedrooms and multiple family lounges, all organised around a carefully considered layout. At its heart lies a mature Plumeria tree, around which the home is sculpted. This natural anchor gives rise to a central courtyard, shaping both movement and visual continuity across the house. Built on a half-acre plot, the design follows a conscious decision to limit ground coverage, allowing the built form to remain compact while freeing up space for generous gardens, backyards, and open-air decks. These green zones play a key role in enhancing the home’s indoor–outdoor relationship.

kArchitecturally, the residence adopts a contemporary language defined by clean lines, balanced volumes, and a restrained palette. A mix of modern materials – metal accents, glass, wood, textured paint, and stone – adds depth without visual excess. Stone finishes are treated with particular care, introducing subtle variations in texture that lend character to the overall composition. The façade is finished in a muted grey tone, softened by the warmth of natural wood elements, creating an exterior that is understated yet distinct.

The home is organised across two levels with clear functional zoning. The ground floor is designed for the parents, while the first floor caters to the son’s lifestyle. Entertainment and family spaces are thoughtfully distributed across both levels, ensuring connectivity while maintaining individual privacy. Principles of Vastu guide the spatial layout, influencing orientation and flow with a focus on balance and harmony. Natural light is prioritised throughout, with north and east-facing openings bringing in soft daylight across the interiors.

Upon entry, the double-height living space establishes the home’s spatial character. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of the outdoors, while neutral tones and wooden ceilings reinforce a sense of warmth and openness. A minimal staircase positioned toward the south introduces vertical movement without interrupting visual continuity. Carefully placed accents, including sculptural elements in restrained colour tones, add subtle contrast to the otherwise calm palette.

One of the most defining features of the home is the central courtyard anchored by the Plumeria tree. The spatial experience unfolds in layers – connected, deliberate, and visually cohesive. Behind the tree, a double-height wall clad in textured Raymond stone creates a sculptural backdrop. Together with a tranquil water body in the foreground, the composition forms a carefully framed sequence that becomes a focal point of the home.

Sunlight plays a dynamic role in animating this space. As light strikes the stone surface at varying angles throughout the day, shifting shadows bring depth and movement to the textures. Adjacent to this setting is the dining area, designed to seat ten. A strategically placed mirror reflects the courtyard composition – tree, stone wall, and water – extending the visual experience and reinforcing the connection between indoor spaces and nature.

Interiors across the home follow a consistent yet layered material approach. Marble surfaces and detailed wall panelling form the base, while selected areas incorporate high-gloss finished panels that add a refined sheen. Grey remains the dominant palette, complemented by blue accents that flow through furniture, soft furnishings, and select architectural elements. Locally crafted furniture adds a sense of authenticity while supporting a more sustainable design approach.

The private bedrooms are designed with equal attention to comfort and spatial quality. The parents’ suite on the ground floor features corner-edge glazing that opens uninterrupted views toward the garden. A structural column is carefully integrated into the layout, maintaining openness without compromise.

Subtle outdoor elements, including a small installation visible from the room, enhance the sense of calm and connection to nature. Family lounges feature curated artworks, while a blue-toned pantry acts as a visual link between shared spaces. Other bedrooms incorporate botanical wallpapers, bespoke furniture, and soft tonal variations to create personalised yet cohesive environments.

Landscaping plays a central role in shaping both architecture and experience. Existing mango trees at the front of the site are preserved and integrated into the design, with the built form responding to their presence rather than disrupting it. At the rear, expansive glazing on the lower level opens up views of the lawn and garden, while custom-designed upper-level screens filter daylight and provide protection from the southern sun.

In essence, this residence brings together functional planning, contemporary design, and a strong relationship with nature. Defined by clarity rather than excess, it offers a calm retreat – one that balances everyday practicality with understated luxury, creating a home that feels grounded, thoughtful, and deeply connected to its surroundings.
