New Facility at Toronto Pearson Airport Sets Standard for Efficiency and Sustainability
Bombardier Inc. has officially opened its state-of-the-art Global jet aircraft manufacturing campus at Toronto Pearson International Airport. Designed by NEUF architect(e)s, this 750,000 sq ft facility sets new benchmarks in precision, efficiency, and sustainability for the aerospace industry.
This new campus represents a significant upgrade from Bombardier’s older Downsview Airport facility, which is being redeveloped. NEUF’s innovative design uses modern materials and meets strict manufacturing and regulatory standards, surpassing international sustainability and safety norms to enhance the assembly and testing of jet aircraft.
“Building an aircraft is as complex as constructing a major building,” said Graham Kelly, Vice President of Operations for Global Aircraft at Bombardier’s Toronto facility. “We needed a space that could handle our large-scale operations, reflect our commitment to innovation, and ensure the safety and wellbeing of our employees. NEUF achieved that perfectly.”
The facility’s layout allows for faster aircraft assembly with clear lines of sight throughout the manufacturing and testing areas. NEUF’s design integrates specialized teams, automated equipment, robotics, and precision components, creating an efficient and safe production environment where employees work in natural daylight with minimal noise distractions.
The facility optimizes energy use and reduces waste, aligning with Bombardier’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Extensive site engineering was required to meet fire and life safety standards within the tightly regulated site, with minimal impact on neighboring airport services and municipal infrastructure. NEUF collaborated with the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, TÜV SÜD Global Risk Consultants, the City of Mississauga, Transport Canada, and NAV Canada to ensure the facility met stringent safety and flight operations standards.
Designed to boost employee morale and wellbeing, the facility features abundant natural light, dedicated training and collaboration spaces, and visual connections across various functions. Short travel distances between workstations, offices, and the production floor increase efficiency and encourage employee interaction.
NEUF, with a 50-year track record of designing complex, industry-specific projects, brought their expertise to create Bombardier’s latest manufacturing facility. They improved Bombardier’s existing processes, introducing innovations within a tight site and strict safety protocols.
“Designing for aerospace is about more than the physical structure,” said Lilia Koleva, Partner Architect at NEUF. “It’s about creating a space that supports Bombardier’s workflow, its people, and the meticulous detail that goes into every jet.”
Bombardier, one of Canada’s most recognized businesses and its largest aerospace company, is proud of its new facility. NEUF shares Bombardier’s commitment to progress and advanced manufacturing, which will be internationally admired for its thoughtful design and workplace advancements.
