AVIARA Residence: A Quiet Symphony in Lutyens’ Delhi

Where classical restraint meets contemporary clarity in a timeless urban sanctuary.

Tucked into the serene, tree-shaded avenues of Lutyens’ Delhi, the AVIARA Residence unfolds as a measured dialogue between classical poise and contemporary clarity. Designed by Workshop for Metropolitan Architecture (WMA), the 10,900 sq. ft. home channels the ethos of quiet luxury – an architectural language that resists the fleeting and leans toward the timeless.

From the outset, the home was imagined as a study in balance: form and function, modernity and memory, the built realm and the natural one. Embraced by the dense greens of the Delhi Zoological Forest, AVIARA feels less like a structure on a site and more like a gentle extension of its landscape. WMA anchors this connection through generous openings, tactile materiality, and meticulous alignments that frame the outdoors as curated vignettes – each one a living canvas.

Light is an active participant here. It slips across surfaces, deepens shadows, and shifts the temperament of spaces from dawn to dusk. The material palette – soft, minimal, and classically inclined – echoes the home’s quiet temperament. Muted pastels, delicate textures, and restrained contrasts compose an atmosphere that is calm yet undeniably refined. The interiors mirror the client’s desire for a home that is evergreen – graceful, grounded, and inherently serene.

Restraint becomes a design driver. Ornamentation steps back so craftsmanship can take the foreground. Wood, natural light, and artisanal detailing form the core narrative, each element calibrated to complement the architectural rhythm and heighten the home’s openness.

Each level of the residence reads like a distinct chapter, held together by an overarching harmony.

The ground floor leans toward essentialism: clean lines, muted hues, purposeful detailing. Oversized windows dissolve boundaries, inviting greenery and daylight deep into the living spaces. Even the kitchen – often relegated to functionality – feels warm, connected, and naturally lit, maintaining the residence’s seamless dialogue with its surroundings.

The first floor carries a more eclectic energy. Here, traditional proportions meet contemporary finishes, creating rooms that feel collected rather than curated. Gentle pops of colour infuse personality, while maintaining the understated palette. Bedrooms opening to garden views become serene retreats, where nature remains a constant, calming companion.

The second floor, envisioned as the social heart of the home, shifts the scale dramatically. A soaring 30-foot ceiling brings grandeur without excess, and large openings usher the space toward the sky. The terrace becomes a natural extension – an elevated threshold where the architecture meets the horizon.

At its core, the residence is also a commitment to mindful living. Entirely powered by solar energy, it weaves sustainability into both performance and experience. Natural ventilation, thermal comfort, and the strategic use of daylight reduce reliance on mechanical systems, creating an environmentally conscious luxury that feels intuitive rather than imposed.

Every gesture in AVIARA carries intention – from the way light filters through its apertures to the subtle transitions between rooms and the shifting perspectives of the surrounding forest. It is a home that champions proportion over embellishment, authenticity over spectacle, and permanence over trend.

Drawing from new classical, eclectic, and modern classic influences, WMA shapes a design language that nods to tradition while firmly rooted in the present. The result is a residence that doesn’t simply house life – it frames it.

In essence, the AVIARA Residence is an experience of quiet grace. A place where luxury whispers, where nature and architecture converse effortlessly, and where timelessness is crafted with intention, materiality, and memory.
