A seamless blend of rustic charm with modern living in Northern California’s Wine Country
Nestled in the heart of Northern California Wine Country, the Wine Country Barn stands as a testament to the seamless fusion of modern architecture with nature. Designed by the esteemed San Francisco architectural firm, Malcolm Davis Architecture (MDa), this captivating addition to the landscape embodies a harmonious blend of contemporary design and rustic charm.
The journey began with the homeowners’ vision to enhance their communal living space for weekends with family and friends. What started as a plan for a large addition to the original house evolved into the creation of a separate entertainment barn and guest house. Drawing inspiration from the region’s rustic barns, MDa’s architectural design incorporates modern detailing to ensure the new structure harmonizes with its surroundings.
To integrate the barn into the existing property and estate, MDa collaborated with the landscape design team, Lucas & Lucas. Their goal was to seamlessly blend the building, which features a guest suite, covered parking, and an outdoor kitchen and living space, into the lush surroundings. The result is a cohesive wine country complex defined by exquisite landscaping and purposeful site lines.
MDa’s design strategy focused on using locally harvested redwood siding, paying homage to the region’s mill town history. The harmonious blend of timber, shapes, and volumes speaks to the local vernacular and fits within the picturesque environment. Embracing sustainability, the team employed passive techniques that prioritize natural elements for comfort, minimizing mechanical and electrical interventions. This environmentally conscious approach ensures the barn complements the natural climate of the region, enhancing energy efficiency.
The interior design, curated by Grant Gibson Interior Design, reflects a timeless aesthetic that complements the overall concept. This project marks the second collaboration between the design-forward homeowners and MDa, offering a serene retreat from their urban San Francisco residence. The Wine Country Barn provides a space where they can immerse themselves in the region’s warmth and rural tranquility, embracing a lifestyle that celebrates the beauty of wine country living.
