Motodo: Rediscovering the Essence of Italian Cuisine in Mumbai

Experience the charm of a traditional Italian Trattoria at Jio World Drive’s newest F&B addition.

Motodo, located in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), is a new and captivating addition to the dining scene. The restaurant’s name cleverly combines the three fundamental ingredients of Italian cuisine – mozzarella, tomato, and dough. With its contemporary take on old-world Italy, Motodo aims to transport guests to a traditional Italian trattoria through its authentic cuisine and interior design.

Spanning 1750 square feet on the second floor of Jio World Drive, Motodo is flanked by other restaurants and features a fully glazed wall at the rear. The client’s vision emphasized the inclusion of an interactive open kitchen and bar, allowing diners to observe the creation of piping hot pizzas as they emerge from the wood-fired oven.

Inspired by the bustling energy of an Italian kitchen, Motodo offers various ways for diners to engage with the live kitchen. Seating clusters, including a unique C-shaped booth nestled within the kitchen counter, enhance the immersive culinary experience, enabling guests to directly participate in the art of pizza-making. At the heart of the kitchen stands a mosaic-tiled wood-fired oven, surrounded by a black marble counter that extends into a bar area with matching bar stools. Behind the kitchen, concealed from view, are dedicated preparation, storage, and wash spaces.

The restaurant’s facade combines grillwork, frosted, and clear glass, establishing a connection with the mall while offering guests different levels of privacy. The rear glazed wall presented an opportunity to create a remarkable enclosed verandah – a rare feature within a mall’s F&B outlet – filled with abundant natural light.

Motodo’s interior design showcases a warm material palette inspired by Italy’s gastronomic heritage. Crafted with the utmost attention to quality, the space features marble, timber, leather, and wrought iron furniture from Lap and Dado, as well as vintage decorative lighting. Terracotta tiles serve as the backdrop for the live kitchen, complemented by glazed blue tiles, timber paneling, and a stained-glass installation resembling a floating light box – a striking centerpiece for the bar and kitchen. The interplay of mosaic tiling and brickwork adds a touch of sophistication and playfulness, paying homage to Italian design sensibilities.

The flooring boasts in situ terrazzo by Greenheart Floors, incorporating bronze-tinted glass chips and copper spacers arranged in a diagonal grid. This flooring, coupled with patterned cement tiles by Bharat Floorings in the verandah, creates a visually captivating space. The alfresco dining area in the verandah is furnished with patio-style furniture woven with outdoor-grade yarn and accentuated by a collection of plants. The extensive use of timber and Green Udaipur stone further enriches the ambiance, creating a comprehensive and culturally relevant material palette.

Motodo celebrates the essence of Italy’s deep connection with food, meticulously capturing its familiar details. It pays tribute to the country’s renowned hospitality and conviviality, evoking nostalgia for a bygone era amidst the fast-paced 21st-century food scene.
