In redesigning Patisserie Hofer, a pastry shop located in Bolzano, South Tyrol, Italy – *noa network of architecture recreates an ambiance Viennese Coffee Shops are famous for.
The pastry shop is located in Bolzano, South Tyrol, Italy
Vienna is the federal capital, largest city and one of nine states of Austria. The Viennese coffee house played an important role in shaping the Viennese culture. In a typical Viennese coffee house patrons can enjoy different kinds of coffee while reading national and international newspapers, socialise with friends and play cards as well. 594 kms away from Vienna, the idea was to recreate a similar kind of ambiance in Patisserie Hofer, a pastry shop located in the city of Bolzano.
During summer the façade opens up and the lounge extends outside
The capital city of the province of South Tyrol in Northern Italy Bolzano is considered as the confluence of Italian and German-Austrian culture. Natives out here are fluent in Italian, German and Ladin. When the owner handed over the business to his son he envisioned a new pastry shop in the style of the famous Vienna coffee house. The brief was to transform the pastry shop into a meeting point for the young and the old. A space where one can sit, relax and read a newspaper apart from indulging in pastries. The project was commissioned to noa* (network of architecture.)
Patisserie Hofer recreates the ambiance of a Viennese coffee house in a contemporary mode
Andreas Profanter, Partner, noa* points out “Our aim was to replicate the warm and welcoming feeling of the traditional coffee-house in Vienna while still maintaining a contemporary style.”
All the interior accessories in this project has been designed by noa*
The total area of the pastry shop – 85 m2 including restrooms is segregated into three main zones: a more protected, traditional sitting area in the back (ca. 25 m2), a central bar and retail area (33m2) and a lounge area in the front (ca. 15m2). During summer the façade opens up and the lounge extends outside. This entices the passer-by of the busy “Museum Street” to come in and enjoy the buzz of the old town. “The facade,” says Andreas, “gives the pastry shop a very special feeling; it allows the interiors to blend with the exteriors and adds an unimaginable quality to the project.”
Using fabric, wood and plaster as the key materials the essence of Vienna coffeehouse was brought to life
The project was meant to be executed in a months’ time and hence the design and planning phase was of the utmost importance in this assignment. Using fabric, wood and plaster as the key materials the essence of Vienna coffeehouse was brought to life. All the interior accessories were also designed by noa*. The lounge area was decked up with vintage furniture which was in possession of the client.
The lighting adds its own charm to the interiors
The project was illumined with LED lighting sources (indirect light strips and spots) to obtain a generally well-lit space. Warmer luminous shades were chosen to achieve the end effect. By adding pendant lamps as well as floor lamps, the designers were able to add charm and warmth to the different areas of the open space.
For endless conversations over a cup of coffee
Andreas believes “Good design has character, one that draws you in and tells a story.” And in designing Project Patisserie Hofer, Team *noa has emphasized it to a tee.
