The inspiration for design comes from infinite sources. Designers have been constantly inspired by symbolic entities. This in turn has led to the infusion of the reptilian kind in the design mainstream. The Serpentine Collection by Koket is one of the fine examples of such inspiration. We spoke to Janet Morais, Creative Director and Founder of Koket about the collection.
What led to the inception of the serpentine collection? How many designers were involved in this project?
I was personally involved in the creation of the Serpentine Collection along with designer Pedro Santos. The desire and boldness to create something new inspired by the fauna and flora around us, led us to design this beautiful collection.
Unlike the eastern cultures where snakes are revered in the west it is usually considered as a symbol of sinfulness, deceit, and just general evil, given this fact, what motivated you to design this collection?
All the Koket pieces transmit very powerful meanings and the snake is always a symbol of strength, defending their ground rather than retreat and this is the kind of message that we want to transmit. All the features of the snake, the good ones and the bad ones are all needed in the spirit of the empowered woman. We wanted to represent the character of the business woman in the simplest way maintaining the KOKET flavor.
How many products are included in the Serpentine Collection? Can you please share the names?
The Mirror – Serpentine Mirror
The Sconce – Serpentine Sconce
What material has been used to design the products under this collection?
We are a brand that values handmade work done by master artisans and while using old techniques. The collection is made of hand carved solid wood and is finished with gold leaf.
Given the cryptic and symbolic nature of your collection, who is your target audience for the serpentine collection?
KOKET constantly tries to create a brand experience which connoisseurs of good design would love to relish. The serpentine collection too is meant for clients who have an eye for craftsmanship, luxury and exclusivity.
The serpentine collection was featured in 2018 edition of the Salone Del Mobile, howwas the market response to the serpentine collection at Salone? In time to come do you see more products being added to this collection?
This collection provokes two completely different reactions from the audience. People either love it or hate it, there really hasn’t been a middle reaction. Very soon we will be adding a new product to this collection. Just wait to be amazed!
In your own words what is the USP of the serpentine collection?
The unique design of this collection makes use of the most exquisite materials and techniques.
